Starburst Cloud Bed
- What it looks like:
-

Difficulty:
- What you need:
-
- Empty cake mix box (about 2 in. x 6 in. x 8 in.)
- Packing tape
- Craft glue
- Scissors that can cut through pipe cleaners
- Cotton balls
- Yellow craft paper
- Blue tissue paper or cloth
- 4 yellow pipe cleaners
- 4 yellow birthday candles
- Small ring box
What you do:
- Tape the ends of the cake mix box closed.
- Lay the box flat like a bed. Pick one end of the box to be to head of the bed and one to be the foot.
- Bend one pipe cleaner into a tall arch across the head of the bed. Tape each end of the pipe cleaner securely to the side of the box.
- Take another pipe cleaner and cut off about 3 inches. Using the longer piece of pipe cleaner, make a low arch across the foot of the bed.
- Cut about 6 inches off of the 3rd pipe cleaner and make it into a circle by twisting the ends together.
- Cut 2 identical stars out of the yellow paper that will fit inside the pipe cleaner circle. Make sure the tips of the stars will just overlap the pipe cleaner.
- Apply a thin layer of glue to one star and then lay the circle on top of the sticky star. Finally, lay the other star on top of the pipe cleaner like you were making a sandwich with the stars as the bread.
- Once the glue is dry, tape the circle to the head of the bed under the tall arch.
- Use the remaining pipe cleaners to make the rays that reach from the tall arch to the circle at the head of the bed, and from the low arch to the end of the box at the foot of the bed. The pieces need to be long enough that they overlap the arches, loop and box just a little bit.
- Glue the ray pieces onto the arches and allow the glue to dry.
- Cover the side of the box at the head of the bed with a thin layer of craft glue. Put a half-inch-thick dab of glue on the bottom of a birthday candle and glue it to edge of the box near the corner. Repeat this on the other corner of the bed.
- Cover the side of the box at the head of the bed with cotton balls before the glue dries including over the ends of the candles. The cotton balls will help keep the candles secure.
- Repeat steps 11 and 12 on the side of the box at the foot of the bed.
- Coat the top of the box and the two long skinny sides of the box with a thin layer of craft glue and cover with cotton balls. They should be close enough you can’t see the box underneath. Be careful not to cover the underside of the box with cotton. Allow the glue to dry.
- Cut 8 identical stars out of the yellow paper. You can also use a star shaped paper punch to make them the same size and shape. There should be 2 for each candle.
- Put a thin layer of glue on one side of each star. Glue 2 stars together with the wick of a candle sandwiched between them. Repeat this for all four candles.
- For the top of the bed, cut a piece of blue tissue paper or cloth to make a blanket and fluff 2 cotton balls to make 2 pillows.
- You can make your bed look like it is floating by gluing the small ring box to the center of the underside of the box!
You could use blue felt for the
blanket in this stellar craft!
